| Dominican
Reflections
By Chantal Courtemanche
At
the beginning of February, I was lucky enough
to hop on a plane to the Dominican Republic
and take a break from winter and my daily
routine. It was my first time on that island.
The Dominicans are always so friendly and
happy go lucky. Since my course at Sharky's
last April, I had purchased fins, boots,
mask and snorkel, which I brought with me.
I was able to snorkel in the ocean whenever
I wished.
My best day of all was the Saturday, when
I was booked on a two dive day to the lovely
beach of Sosua. Chici our dive master was
very easy going. Because of my back problems,
I did not want to enter the waters using
the roll back method. He was very helpful
in getting me suited-up in the water. It
is quite a different experience to dive
in the ocean. You don't have to worry about
controlling your buoyancy. You float so
much easily in salt water. We took some
bananas with us, and opened them up just
a bit, and after that you could not see
in front of you because there was so many
fish all around us. I saw some trumpet fish
and blue tang. For me the most impressive
thing were the black sea urchins. We had
a professional photographer take pictures
of us. They made great souvenirs.
In closing, I would just like to thank
Rudy, my instructor who helped me get my
open water certification. I was extremely
nervous under water, I still am, but Rudy,
thanks again for your great patience, friendly
and professional manner in which you teach.
