| Sharky's
Clean-up at Mooney's Bay
by Jessica Guerero
On Saturday, July 28, 33 volunteers participated
in an underwater clean-up of Mooney's Bay
in an eco-friendly event organized and promoted
by Sharky's Scuba Supply. Event coordinator,
Caroline Samson explains, "Project Aware
is about understanding our impact on the
environment – both negative and positive,
and showing that we can make a difference
when we work together".
Throughout the course to the day, divers
brought up dozens of recovery bags filled
with glass bottles, cans, plastic bags,
chains, fishing line and other refuse hidden
beneath the surface. The divers also removed
old tires and a large oil drum. The volunteers
were in turn provided with food and drink
provided by Sharky's and the opportunity
to mingle with other members of Ottawa's
dive community.
"Discover Scuba" sessions offered to the
general public at the beach were also a
big hit, giving curious onlookers the opportunity
to participate in an orientation lecture,
get suited up and actually experience scuba
for a 15 minute dive. The discover sessions
were offered free of charge thanks to the
time donated by the volunteer instructors.
"A great way to promote the joy of scuba
is to actually let people try it
especially in a fun setting like Moony's
bay" explains Mike Morris, owner of the
dive shop.
Sharky's thanks Oceaner, PADI Canada, Diversco,
and Coast to Coast our event sponsors
and appreciates the support of the City
of Ottawa. A big thank you for all who participated
in making this such a successful event.
